Allsop Europe
Picture this. It's the late 1970s. Mike and I had bigger sideburns than we care to remember. Our audiocassette cleaners and VCR cleaners were taking off - the business was huge - and we decided to take Allsop, Inc. international. We went around the world signing up new distributors. We were exporting goods from the US into Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Asia. But we were having a hard time keeping up with demand. We needed another manufacturing plant. Right about the same time, there was a big effort in Ireland to attract manufacturing companies. They invited us to come to Ireland.
Now, the name Allsop is derived from the old English "Ale Shop." Seriously. Apparently, way back, my grandfather's grandfather's grandfather served beer. This family history worked well with the Irish affinity for pubs, so after we toured the country and drank a few pints of Guinness, we decided it was a perfect fit. Within a year we set-up a mirror image manufacturing plant in Waterford, Ireland, and we have been heavy into the Guinness Programme ever since.
Allsop Europe Ltd. opened for business in 1978. Luke Cody joined us in 1984 and took over leadership of the plant in 1985. Under his leadership, Allsop Europe Ltd. has flourished. Currently, Allsop products are available in literally every country in Europe and the Middle East, and now looks forward to the new opportunities with the accession of ten new member states to the European Union. Considering the language variations, this is quite an achievement. It's a world-class manufacturing facility, having successfully achieved ISO 9001 and ISO 9002 certification, back in 1994.
